Wife set ablaze for not bringing dowry

Jabalpur, Jul 21: A Muslim woman was admitted to the hospital in a serious condition after she was set ablaze by her husband on Sunday, July 21, as she failed to bring Rs 80,000 as dowry, police said.

Police said Anwari Begum, resident of the city's Madar Tekri area, was being harassed by her husband Wahid since their marriage eight years ago. Due to persistent domestic discord, Amwari Begum returned to her father's house few months ago.

However, Wahid brought back his wife on Sunday, July 21, and both had dinner together. Later Wahid doused his wife with kerosene and set her ablaze. In a bid to escape, Anwari Begum hugged her husband, who also suffered burns.

On hearing shrieks, neighbours gathered and got her admitted to the hospital. On her complaint, police arrested Wahid and later admitted him also in the hospital in police custody.
