Three convicted in 1992 riots case
Mumbai, Jul 19 (UNI) A special riots court today sentenced three persons to two years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for assaulting a police constable during the 1992-93 communal riots in the city.
Magistrate S S Sharma convicted Hasan Shaikh, Sayed Karim Chand and Salim Sayed and slapped them with a penalty of Rs 3,500 each.
The trio were convicted on the basis of the complainant's statement and his medical report from the govenrment hospital stating that he was assulted.
According to the prosecution, on March 23, 1993, complainant Vijay Ambedkar, a police constable, was on patrol duty when he saw the trio troubling an insane man at Ghatkopar, an eastern suburb.
When the constable tried to stop them, the accused forcibly pushed him into an autorickshaw and attacked him.
Prosecution produced three witnesses in this regard, but they all turned hostile.
