Student attempts to commit suicide in Dhule

Dhule, July 19 (UNI) A 21-year-old student attempted to commit suicide by setting himself ablaze following the embarrassment that he had to face in college over non-payment of fees.

According to police, Rajiv Atram Gaikwad, a third-year student at a private agriculture college here, immolated himself in the hostel room on Thursday. He sustained over 53 per cent burns.

Rajiv, who belonged to economically weaker section of society, also worked in a hotel to make the ends meet. However, he was unable to pay his full fees in the college. Depressed over this, he took the extreme step, police said.

Rajiv was immediately rushed to the civic hospital here, where his condition is said to be critical.
