Nagpur varsity confers D Litt on Lata Mangeshkar

Nagpur, Jul 19 (UNI) Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) conferred an honorary degree of D Litt (Doctor of Literature) upon melody queen Lata Mangeshkar today.

Her nephew, Adinath Mangeshkar, son of Lata's brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar, accepted the degree on her behalf at the 95th convocation of the university here. Ms Mangeshkar could not attend the convocation because of 'personal reasons.' Justice (retired) C S Dharmadhikari, who delivered the convocation address, presented the degree and the scroll of honour to Mr Adinath.

In a video address, Ms Mangeshkar said she was honoured to have received the degree from RTMNU, but was not able to personally accept the same. RTMNU Vice Chancellor Dr S N Pathan had earlier met the melody queen in Mumbai to extend her a formal invitation for the convocation.

Octogenarian researcher Shrikrishna Gopal Kashikar was also awarded a degree of D Litt for his thesis titled 'Dialogue with Pakistan.' The degrees and prizes for the examinations conducted in 2007 were also awarded at the convocation. While 136 candidates were awarded their doctorates, 50,536 candidates were formally conferred with their graduation and post-graduation degrees.
