Panaji, July 18 (UNI) Goa Power Minister Alexieo Sequeira has favoured setting up of a nuclear power plant in the state, if everything goes well with the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Interacting with mediapersons here today, he said nuclear power is clean and cheaper than other sources and does not affect the environment.

Goa had hitherto been depending on other states for its energy requirements, with no power plant of its own since its liberation in 1961.

When asked whether setting up of a nuclear power plant was possible in Goa, where people cry hoarse against having garbage disposal plants in their vicinity, the said the state should have a power plant of its own some day or the other.

He justified having a power plant, as Goa was getting power at Rs 2 per unit from Tarapur atomic power plant and from Kakrajar plant at Rs 2.75 paise, as against Rs 4 from Dhabol gas plant and Rs 10 from Naptha based Reliance power plant.
