Shimla, Jul 18 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today said that Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College at Tanda in Kangra district will be developed on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to provide best medical facilities to the people of the state.

Speaking at the ''Samman Samaroh'', organised by Palampur Journalists Association in Kangra district, he said a proposal to his effect has already been sent to the Centre following its decision to set up an AIIMS type hospital in every state.

Mr Dhumal said Vivekananda Medical College and Research Institute at Palampur would also be developed as the centre of par excellence, where different types of diagnostic and treatment facilities would be made available.

Referring to the setting up of an IIT in the state, he said the Himachal Pradesh Government had proposed a suitable site at Katola near Mandi town for which the Centre had already sanctioned Rs 760 crore.

A team of the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry would visit the state on July 25 and 26 to finally approve the site and prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the project's execution, he added.

He said the state government would insist upon starting IIT classes from this academic session as had been done in the case of other states.

The government would provide accommodation for the classes in the Government Degree College at Mandi, besides local PWD resthouse and hostel at Drang, Mr Dhumal informed.

The Chief Minister IPH rest house in Mandi town would also be made available for teaching purposes, if the need arose. Practical classes, to begin with, could be held at National Institute at Hamirpur, besides the main centre at IIT Roorkee, he said.

He said a Central University was also being established at Dehra in Kangra district and this would cater to the education requirements of the students of the entire region.

Mr Dhumal said his government had also decided to establish a Disaster Management Battalion near Nurpur as this had been considered to be the appropriate place for setting up such a centre.
