Congress will never compromise on national interests: Sonia
Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, Jul 17 (UNI) Striking a hard note ahead of the confidence vote, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said there was no question of the Congress or its leaders compromising on the nuclear or foreign policy of the country.
Addressing a public rally here after launching the ''Rajiv Gandhi Aarogya Sri'', aiming to provide cashless treatment and surgery to 6.5 crore Below Poverty Line (BPL) population in 23 districts of the state, Ms Gandhi recalled that it was the Congress and its leaders Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi who had made the country self-reliant in almost every spheres even at the cost of their lives.
Explaining the need for making India a self-reliant country in power generation to meet the future needs, Ms Gandhi asked how the government could be faulted for making efforts to improve power availability by opting for the latest nuclear technology available.
''We are accused of compromising the country's interests. Let me state before you there was no question of compromising on country's autonomy, security, nuclear energy and foreign policy,'' she said adding that the Congress alone could claim credit for starting the nuclear programme of the country to secure its interests.
