Left canal of Varahi Irrigation Project damaged

Udupi, Jul 10 (UNI) The rains that lashed the coastal districts of Karnataka have caused extensive damage due to severe land slides at several places at the left canal of the Varahi Irrigation Project in Udupi district.

The land slides which occurred at Halady, Kakkunje and Jamadagni, caused large scale damage to the left canal of the project.

The stone and cement walls constructed to protect the canal in these stretches were extensively damaged and water had entered the nearby agricultural lands.

Roads at these stretches have also been damaged.

For the 25-year-old project, the government had spent Rs 365 crore so far, but yet to be completed.
