SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, after a meeting of the party's Parliamentary Board here yesterday had claimed that there was no split in the party and all MPs except one would vote in favour of the Government if a no confidence motion was brought against it, as the Left and the BJP had already threatened to do so.

Despite Mr Yadav's claim that all MPs would follow the party whip, there were clear indications of dissent in the group over the issue of nuclear deal and suport to the Congress. Moreover, as many as about 10 MPs were absent from the Board meeting.

The absence of the four--Mohan Singh, Reotoiraman Singh and Kirtivardhan and Radheshyam Kori-- was explained as due to personal reasons.

However, they were not being counted among dissidents.

Atique Ahmad and Afzal Ansari was in jail, while Mr Beni Prasad Verma, Mr Raj Babbar and Munawwar Husain along with Atique Ahmad had been suspended and were effectively not with the SP, so there was no question of their coming to the Board meeting. Two of them -- Mr Verma and Mr Babbar -- were likely to vote for the Congress, as after their estrangement with the SP, Congress was the party they had come closer to. Ironically, they now find themselves in the same boat as the SP.

The list of 38 MPs included 37 of SP and one of the National Loktantrik Party--Mr Baleshwar Yadav.

Mr Jay Prakash had already expressed his open disapproval of the nuclear deal, though party leaders said he will be talked to to come along.

A day before the SP Parliamentary Board meeting, the reports that that the party's arch rival BSP was trying to poach on its MPs had upset the Congress leadership as the ruling party was mainly banking on the SP support in case of a no confidence motion which was now a certainty.

Meanwhile, Mr Amar Singh met party MPs at his residence before meeting the President.
