Man, parents get 9 years imprisonment for dowry harasment

Sangli, Maharashtra, July 9 (UNI) A local court today sentenced a man and his parents to nine year imprisonment for torturing his wife over dowry demand.

Baba Ashok Sanap (27), his father Ashok Sanap (58) and mother Premabai (52) started harassing Baba's wife Vaishali, after a few months of their marriage, demanding Rs one lakh from her parents, as per a complaint lodged by Vaishali relative, police said. Frustrated over this treatment, she allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well on September 21, 2007, police said.

The court convicted the trio under section 304 and section 498 of Indian Penal Code and sentenced them to seven years and two years of imprisonment under both the sections respectively, police said.
