HC issues notice to Amarinder on poll petition
Chandigarh, Jul 9 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued a notice for August 27 to former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on a election petition.
The petition was filed by a voter, Sukhbeer Singh challenging Capt Singh's election to the Vidhan Sabha in 2007 from Patiala constituency, holding that the poll petition was filed within prescribed time limit.
The notice to Capt Singh was issued by Justice Rajive Bhalla.
The arguments so far had been going on about the maintainbility of the petition as the counsel for Capt Singh argued it was filed on April 18,2007 whereas the last date for filing such petitions was April 13. However the counsel for petitioner pointed out that since the High Court was observing holdays from April 9 to 15 and reopened only on April 18, hence it was within the time limit under section 10 of general clauses act, 1897.
The petition would now be taken up for hearing on August 27.
