AASU welcomes ULFA peace overtures

Guwahati, Jul 9 (UNI) The All Assam Students Union (AASU) today welcomed the peace overtures shown by a section of former ULFA cadres, but advocated discussion with the outfit's collective leadership to ''avoid confusion''.

Addressing a press conference here, the AASU leadership, led by its advisor Dr Samujjal Kr Bhattachhya, president Sankar Prasad Ray and general secretary Tapan Gogoi, welcomed the initiative taken by a section of the ULFA leadership for peace, but added that it would be much more fruitful if the entire collective leadership joined in the whole venture.

''As the guardian of the people and to ensure their security, the state government should take the initiative to start the negotiations with ULFA,'' the union stated.
