SC refuses to entertain PIL against Sachar Committee
New Delhi, Jul 8 (UNI) The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a PIL challenging the implementation of Sachar Committee Report recommending preference to the minorities in government jobs and education.
A bench comprising Chief Justices K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal permitted former Uttar Pradesh DGP B P Singhal, elder brother of VHP leader Ashok Singhal, to withdraw his petition.
Earlier, the bench told the petitioner's counsel that this court was not inclined to intervene in the policy matter.
Counsel for the petitioner had contended that the Sachar Committee was illegally appointed to appease the minorities, particularly the Muslim community and the order of the government to ascertain the percentage of Muslims in Armed Forces is bound to create a divide in the Army on communal lines.
According to the petitioner, no community or a religious group can be given preference over other communities as it violates the Fundamental Right to equality guaranteed under Article 14 in the Constitution of India.
