Rail traffic disrupted after engine catches fire
Rupnagar, Jul 8 (UNI) Rail traffic on Rupnagar-Nangal section was today disrupted after a railway diesel engine of a goods train caught fire at village Lang Majari near Anandpur Sahib.
According to railway sources here the accident occured when the goods train bound for Nangal began moving in the reverse direction, that is backwards towards Anandpur Sahib. This happened as the track from Anandpur Sahib to Nangal moves from low to higher gradient.
After moving for about 50 feet in the reverse direction, the engine of the train caught fire. The engine was completely destroyed in the fire which also damaged overhead high tension electricity wires. Some portion of the rail track was also damaged.
On getting the information of the accident, senior railway officials reached the spot immediately and started the repair work.
The loss due to burning of the engine is being estimated to be around Rs 8 crore.
As a result of the incident the rail traffic on Rupnagar-Nangal section was disrupted. The traffic could not be restored till late in the evening.
