PMK leader plea to HC for basic amenities to Guru

Chennai, July 8 (UNI)The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) today moved Madras High Court seeking a direction to the police to provide all basic amenities to Party Treasurer and Vanniyar Sangam Leader 'Kaduvetti' J Guru who was arrested in connection with an attempt- to-murder case.

When the petition filed by PMK Ariyalur District Deputy General Secretary R Balu came up for hearing, Mr Justice A Kulasekaran posted the matter for tomorrow to decide on its maintainability.

In his petition, Mr Balu said Mr Guru, arrested and lodged in Tiruchirapalli Prison, was remanded to police custody yesterday.

But his whereabouts were not known till midnight yesterday, he contended and sought a direction to the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, Ariyalur District Superintendent of Police and Meensuritti Police Station Inspector to provide all basic amenities, including quality water and medical facilities to Mr Guru.

The petitioner also demanded action against the policemen involved in the 'brutal attack and lathicharge' on PMK workers who had staged a demonstration when Mr Guru was taken in a police van after being remanded in police custody.

Several PMK volunteers, including women, sustained serious injuries in the police action, he claimed and sought a direction to the government to provide quality medical treatment to the injured in the hospital.

Mr Guru, who had made some derogatory remarks against frontline DMK leaders leading to the DMK snapping its ties with the PMK, was arrested on July five in a case of attempt-to-murder.

After he was remanded in judicial custody, he was produced before a court yesterday which remanded him to police custody for two days.
