Bus collision kills 20 in eastern Bangladesh

Dhaka, Jul 7 (UNI) At least 20 people were killed and 24 others injured when a bus plunged into a roadside ditch after a head-on collision with another bus on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the eastern district of Comilla this morning.

Police said the Dhaka-bound bus collided with another bus coming from the opposite direction and fell into the water-filled ditch along with 40 passengers.

Highway police and fire fighters, with the help of local people, recovered 19 bodies, including those of two women, from the sunken bus till 1400 hrs (local time).

The rescue workers said the death toll is likely to go up as more passengers are trapped inside the bus. Many of the passengers managed to swim ashore.

The injured passengers were admitted to a local hospital, where a woman died.
