AP CM's son initiates scholarship scheme for poor students

Kakinada, July 7 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy's son Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is the Chairman of Telugu daily 'Saakshi,' has come forward to assist poor students for pursuing their studies.

He has extended patronage to the JMR Educational Society, set up under his name by a group of social activists at Visakhapatnam last year, by funding 20 per cent of the total expenditure. He had also assured the society of more funds through some of his industrialist friends.

Addressing a press conference here, JMR Educational Society Secretary Jajimoggala Malleswerarao said the society, under the Chairmanship of Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy, would conduct merit scholarship tests every year for selecting meritorious poor students to provide financial assistance to them.

In the initial year, the scheme would be limited to five districts -- Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatanam, Guntur and Kadapa.

A total of 42 students -- 27 at school level and 15 at college level -- were extended financial assistance to the tune of Rs 11 lakh under the scheme, he added.

The society planned to extend the scheme to all the districts in the state in a phased manner within a couple of years.
