Meghalaya cops probes arms seizure in Mizoram

Shillong, Jul 6 (UNI) Meghalaya police today started an investigation into the seizure of the huge cache of arms and ammunition in Mizoram.

Yesterday, the Mizoram police seized 7 AK 47 rifles, 1 rocket launcher, 1 cell of rocket launcher, 13 rounds of nine mm pistol, 10 live ammunition of AK 47 and an empty G-3 magazine from a car bearing a Meghalaya registration number ML-05 C 6206 at the Vairengte check gate bordering Assam.

However, the driver, suspected to be a Burmese, managed to escape, while the personnel were busy frisking the vehicle, a Mizoram police official said.

Meanwhile, a senior Meghalaya police official today said police have identified the registration number of the vehicle and efforts are on to find its owner.

''The Meghalaya registration number is genuine, but those who used the vehicle are not from the state,'' the official said.
