BJP demands 'White Paper' on protection for Indian fishermen
Rameswaram, July 6 (UNI) Tamil Nadu unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today demanded a 'White Paper' from the United Progressive Alliance(UPA) Government on steps taken to protect Indian fishermen from the frequent attacks by Sri Lankan Navy.
Talking to newspersons here, BJP State President L Ganesan said the Government should explain the steps being taken by Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) stationed here to protect the lives of Indian fishermen from the indiscriminate attacks by the Sri Lankan navy.
Stating that the attacks against innocent fishermen by the Lankan navy had increased in the recent times, he urged the Centre to initiate steps to protect the fishermen.
Mr Ganesan also urged the State Government to lay proper road from Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi. A large number of pilgrims from the entire country visit the pilgrim centre here, hence the Government should lay proper road with adequate security, enabling the pilgrims to reach the Island here to offer prayers, he added.
The BJP leader was here to offer special pujas, organised by the Ramar Sethu Protection Committee as part of the ongoing 'Ramar Sethu Theertha Yatra'.
