Minister assures welfare measures for workers

Bangalore, Jul 5: Karnataka Labour Minister B N Bachche Gowda today said the Department of Labour is planning to introduce several welfare measures like providing insurance, scholarships for construction workers and their children.

Talking to reporters here, he said there were more than 12 lakh workers like masons, carpenters and plumbers engaged in construction-related works in the state and the department had already identified 39,000 workers so far.

The department plans to provide them with insurance cover worth Rs one lakh in emergency situations like accidents and death of workers, scholarships to their children upto graduation level besides maternity allowance for two children, he said.

The government was also contemplating to set up a skill development centre for workers in Ramanagar, he added.
