Geelani, Omar still under house arrest

Srinagar, Jul 4: Chairmen of both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) were still under house arrest, official sources here said.

They said the duo was put under house arrest on Wednesday evening and the move was a precautionary measure.

A spokesman of the breakaway HC Aiyaz Akbar told UNI that it was done to prevent him from participating in the congregation at Hazratbal.

He said Mr Geelani had given 'Hazratbl chalo' call to offer special prayers ''to thank God for victory in the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) land issue.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed outside Mr Geelani's residence and he cannot leave his residence till further orders, he said.

A spokesman of the moderate HC Shahidul Islam said Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq was also put under house arrest since last night.
