Fishermen to observe indefinite strike
Rameswaram, Jul 4 (UNI) To protest against frequent attacks by Sri Lankan Navy, fishermen from the Island town of Rameswaram embarked on an indefinite strike from tomorrow.
Talking to UNI here today, N J Bose, General Secretary of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Fishermen Federation, said about 3,000 country boats and 1,000 mechanised fishing trawlers would not venture into sea from tomorrow.
He said all allied industries would also join the indefinite strike as a mark of protest against the alleged atrocities of the Sri Lanakan Navy.
He alleged that even after several requests from fishermen and their families, the Indian government had failed to protect their rights.
On July 10, fishermen and their families would stage a rail-road roko at Pamban to draw the attention of the authorities about the plight of fishermen, he added.
