Strike by taxi drivers in Dubai peters off
Dubai, Jul 3 (UNI) A threat to go on strike by thousands of taxi drivers including Indians in Dubai apparently petered off with only about 50 stopping work for an hour, the transport authority officials said.
A group of around 50 taxi drivers stopped work for one hour yesterday, after being enticed by a small number of drivers, said the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The RTA said a limited number of drivers incited and abetted their colleagues to stop work. However, the situation was generally normal and almost all drivers were on duty, he claimed.
The Gulf News report did not say if any punitive action had been taken against the striking drivers.
The drivers had threatened to go on strike after big fines were introduced to improve the service. The drivers say they are already hardpressed to meet targets with persisting traffic jams and low income.
