Pondy experiences acute petrol shortage
Puducherry, Jul 1 (UNI) The Union Territory of Puducherry is experiencing acute petrol shortage following panic buying by the people in view of the lorry strike from today.
Several petrol bunks were closed as the stock was exhausted and long queues were seen in front of petrol bunks which had stocks.
However, many were giving only one litre per vehicle.
Meanwhile, goods transporters in Puducherry threatened to continue their strike even if the nation-wide agitation was called off.
The agitation was to protest against the introduction of spot fine and the strike would continue till the system was withdrawn, Goods Transporters Association President Kesavan said.
Puducherry Manitha Urimai Kazhagam urged the administration to withdraw the spot fine system.
Kazhagam Secretary Sunil Das, in a statement here, said it was already found that the spot fine system was not suited for Puducherry.
He alleged that the fine system would be misused by corrupt police personnel to make money from motorists. This should not be allowed , he added.
He also urged the administration to set up mobile courts to collect the fine.
