Kolkata, Jul 1 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury today called upon the State Women's Commission to take necessary steps to make mentioning of mother's name mandatory in all applications of a minor child.

Ms Chowdhury made this observations while addressing a seminar here on "Indecent Representation of Women in Media,'' organised by the National Commission for Women (NCW).

'' Gender is a socially constructed theory and we have to transcend that. In the changed society, the stereotyped version of womenhood should also be changed,'' she observed.

Ms Chowdhury urged the media to be ''self-regulatory'' in producing news on women and women's issues and rued that predominance of male attitude was in every sphere of the society, be it in politics, advertising or the corporate sector.

She made an appeal to all to stop considering girl child as ''paraya dhan'' and liability and start thinking them as ''recurring deposits.'' The seminar was also addressed by noted film maker Prakash Jha and NCW Chairperson Dr Girija Vyas, both of whom stressed on the need for a change of mindset in the society on women.
