Police seize sophisticated pistol from man

Mumbai, Jun 30 (UNI) The city police seized a highly sophisticated Israeli-make 'Urzi' pistol, worth Rs four lakhs in the international market, from a man at Mulund in North-east Mumbai.

Joint Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria told reporters here today that acting on a tip off that a person would be coming to Mulund, near Sandeep Bar and Restaurant, to deliver a weapon to a party, Crime branch unit-V laid a trap at the spot. At around 1930 hours last Saturday, accused Vijay Manohar Tawde (32) arrived there, carrying a bag.

The crime branch sleuths swooped on him and recovered the 'Uzri' pistol and 9mm magazine along with 32 live cartridges from his possession. It was for the first time that such a pistol had been seized in the city, he said.

Maria said Tawde was earlier arrested in 1996 while supplying 102 Kg of Mandrax tablets and underwent a 10 year jail term. He had been released in 2006.

Tawde was produced before a Metropolitan Magistrate, who remanded him to police custody till July five, Mr Maria added.
