Cabinet okays 5% OBC reservation in educational institutes
New Delhi, Jun 30 (UNI) The Delhi Cabinet today gave its nod for five per cent reservation in admissions for OBCs in government-run technical and higher educational institutions.
The reservation would be applicable in all diploma, undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and comes into effect from this academic session, said Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, while briefing mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting.
She said that the present quota of reservation for SCs/STs would however, remain same, while the the total number of seats would be enhanced by ten per cent.
Stating that the reservation of 27 per cent for OBCs was being implemented in phases, she said her Government would ensure that this would be fully implemented by 2012-13.
To ensure that the overall opportunities available to general category candidates do not get diminished, she said an increase in the total number of seats by 54 per cent would be carried out.
The Chief Minister said a Bill- The Delhi Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission Bill), 2008 would be introduced in the Assembly soon for this purpose.
