Bhopal, June 29 : President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Sunday called upon the distance education institutions to ensure that they reach the doorstep of those who are unable to continue their studies in the formal system.

President Patil was speaking at the inauguration function of the newly constructed Administrative and Academic Block of Bhoj Open University in Bhopal.

Patil said, "Distance education universities should play a vital role in educating women living in far-flung areas, so that they can be associated with the development process of the country."

Since last few years, distance education technique has developed a lot in the country especially with the amalgamation of information and communication technology including electronic and satellite-based technology, Patil added.

The President said that at present there is a need to provide education based on new technology to the country's youth as the world today needed trained hands.

"After the beginning of Edusat, two-way communication technology has developed with the help of video and radio enabling establishment of communication between teacher and the pupil. Such a technology can play a vital role in spreading education in rural areas," she said.

The President further added, "Universities, especially distance education institutions can play a major role in this regard."

The foundation stone of the building was laid by former President late Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma in 1992.

Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakahar, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Higher Education Minister Anoop Mishra and Vice-Chancellor Kamlakar Singh were also present at the occasion.
