Helmets made mandatory in Pondy
Puducherry, Jun 28 (UNI) The Puducherry administration has made wearing of helmet compulsory for two-wheeler riders with effect from July 1.
Addressing a press conference here this evening, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) S Kuppusamy said Director General of Police Khan had issued orders to make helmet compulsory as per the Puducherry Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
He said no exemption would be provided to women and members of the Sikh community in the Union Territory.
Mr Kuppusamy said the spot-fine system would be reintroduced here from June 30. Initially, it would only be for public transport vehicles and later extended to two-wheelers, he added.
He said as many as 34,000 traffic violation cases were pending with the police here in the last two years, forcing it to take remedial steps.
