Maharashtra Governor pays tribute to Sam Manekshaw

Mumbai, Jun 27 (UNI) In a tribute to Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw who died in a military hospital in Wellingdon last night, Maharashtra Governor S C Jamir today described the hero of the 1971 Indo-Pak war as the icon of generations.

In his tribute to the deceased former Army Chief, Mr Jamir said, ''His life was an inspiring saga of patriotism and selfless service to the nation. A world-class military strategist, the Field Marshal epitomised brilliance, courage and exemplary leadership qualities.'' His ability to motivate the armed forces and outmanouvre the opposition helped India win the 1971 war in a most impressive manner and his services to the nation were immeasurable and the nation will remain in eternal gratitude to him, the Governor said.

''On behalf of the people of Maharashtra and on my own behalf, I salute the memory of Field Marshal Manekshaw and convey my heartfelt condolences to members of his family,'' he added.
