Former Rajasthan CM S C Mathur appointed Assam Governor
New Delhi, Jun 26 (UNI) Mr Shiv Charan Mathur, who has been appointed Governor of Assam, is a former Chief Minister of Rajasthan and presently serving his sixth term in the state Assembly.
He replaces Lt Gen (retd) Ajai Singh as Governor of Assam.
Born on February 14, 1926, at Marhi Kanungo in Guna in Madhya Pradesh, Mr Mathur is a Congress veteran in Rajasthan and has twice served as Chief Minister of the state--from July 14, 1981 to February 23, 1985, and from January 20, 1988, to December 4, 1989-.Presently he is MLA from Mandalgarh (Bhilwara).
Mr Mathur first entered Lok Sabha from Bhilwara in 1964 and again won the Lok Sabha election from there in 1991.
He served as a Union Cabinet Minister from 1967 to 1972 and as Agriculture Minister from 1973 to 1977.
He has a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma in Labour Welfare and is an alumni of Agra and Bombay Universities.
He has visited Canada, Britain, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Lebnan, America, UAE, China and Egypt.
Though lacking mass appeal he rose to become the Chief Minister with the blessings of the party High Command.
Born to Mr Durga Prasad and Late Damyanti Devi, he is married to Ms Sushila Mathur and has a son and two daughters.
