Two schools, community centre opened for tsunami victims
Karaikal, Jun 25 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal today declared open two middle schools and a community centre, constructed by the Rajiv Gandhi National Foundation at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore, at the tsunami-hit Pattinacherry and Keezhkasakkudimedu areas of the Union Territory here.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Jaiswal said AICC president Sonia Gandhi was paying special attention to the rehabilitation of the tsunami affected through the Rajiv Gandhi National Foundation.
Union Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs V Narayanasamy said as many as 2,600 houses were constructed by the government for the tsunami victims.
The territorial administration had allocated more funds for the construction of houses in the current budget, he added.
The Centre was paying more attention to the backward areas in the territory and the Karaikal region would get a Special Economic Zone soon, he added.
Later, Mr Jaiswal arrived at Puducherry where he will preside over a meeting to review the law and order situation in the Union Territory.
Lt Governor Bhopinder Singh, Chief Minister N Rangasamy, his cabinet collegues, Mr V Narayansami, and senior officials will take part in the review meeting.
