Haryana agri university bags award in mungbean research

Hisar, Jun 25 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR), Kanpur, a body of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has conferred Best Team Award -2008 to the team of scientists working on mungbean research at Ch Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCS HAD) here.

The award carrying a certificate and memento has been awarded to the scientists of CCS HAU in view of their notable contributions in the mungbean research in the country. This award was presented to the scientists at the Annual Kharfi Pulses Workshop of IIPR held recently in Gujarat.

The team headed by Dr Ram Kumar Yadav, Senior Scientist (Pulses) comprised of Dr B N Dahiya, R S Waldia, Y S Tomer, Rakesh Kumar, M S Sangwan, Roshan Lal, Naresh Kumar and S S Dudeja.

While applauding the contributions of the team of the awardee, CCS HAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr J C Katyal and Director of Research, Dr B S Chhillar said that the scientists had developed a number of new mungbean high yielding varieties and production and plant protection technologies.

The new varieties including Sattya-MH-215, Basanti MH-125 and early maturing varieties MH-318 and MH-421 are very popular amongst farmers. The MH-418, MH-521, MI-1-560, MH-564 and MH-565 are also the elite genotypes which are being tested at more than 43 locations in the country.

A number of genotypes developed by this team namely MI-1-318, MH-98-1, MH-98-7 and MH-96-1 are being used as source of resistance against a number of diseases in the country's breeding programme.

The HAU scientists are hoping that with the popularisation of the production and plant protection technologies of these varieites, the area under mungbean in Haryana would be enhanced from 25,000 hectares to 80,000 hectares by the next sowing season.
