Former Cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu arrested

Chandigarh, Jun 23: Amritsar MP and former Cricketer, Navjot Singh Sidhu, was arrested in Chandigarh on Monday, June 23 while protesting against the rising prices of essential commodities near sector 17 Parade ground here.

Police had to resort to a mild lathicharge when Sidhu and his supporters insisted on marching to the Punjab Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum to the governor on price rise. Police also used a water cannon to disperse the protestors who were shouting slogans against the UPA government.

"The way that our protest has been handled shows that the intentions of the government are bad. We wanted to walk peacefully for a little distance but the police did not allow us to do that," Sidhu said at the Sector 17 police station where he was taken after his arrest.

The force of the water cannon disilaced Sidhu's turban from his head. Sidhu criticised the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for "its wrong policies", which he claimed had led to inflation. They talk of the aam aadmi (common man) whereas the prices are now beyond the reach of most Indians. This government has no right to be in power," Sidhu said.
