Spray-on condoms get a boost from CSI mention
London, June 20 : Spray-on condoms became one of the most Googled items after being featured in CBS' popular forensics television show CSI.
The 'instant contraceptive' was talked about on the show when the latex residue acted as a clue to the motive for a woman's violent murder.
The on-air mention drove thousands to search on Google for more information about the phrase 'spray on condom'.
It even shot up to second place in Google Trends, the internet giant's rolling database of the most searched terms on the web.
Demonstrating it on a model, the character Lindsay Monroe said: "Simply apply like so. Allow a few moments for maximum drying time and, boom. Instant condom."
However, the one-size-fits-all contraceptives may never hit the shelves, after the German inventor behind them admitted his team had been unable to overcome technical problems.
Jan Vinzenz Krause of the German Institute for Condom Consultancy drew media attention from across the world when he announced his pioneering design in 2006.
Appealing for testers to come forward, he promised the spray-on condom would offer a better, safer fit for men of all sizes, and said he hoped to have it on sale by 2008.
However, the project has since hit problems and may never reach the market, according a statement posted on his website.
"Whether we can solve the technical problems, and whether the advancement of the idea is financially viable, remains uncertain," the Telegraph quoted Krause, as stating.
