Sanghmitra bags prestigious Red Ribbon Award-2008

Mumbai, Jun 20 (UNI) Sanghmitra, a community-based organisation for female sex workers in the city has bagged the prestigious Red Ribbon Award-2008, for their work for sex workers at UN General Assembly Special Session for HIV/AIDS at New York.

The Red Ribbon Award presented every two years at the International AIDS Conference, is designed to honour and celebrate outstanding community initiatives that show leadership in reducing the spread and impact of AIDS, a release said here today.

The award, announced on June 11, is a joint effort of the UNAIDS family, together with the Leadership and Community Program Committees of the XVII International AIDS Conference, the release said.

Sanghmitra was formed in 2005, with support from Population Services International (PSI), India to provide to sex workers a fortified platform on which they can raise their voices and concerns independently.
