FKJGP demands allotment of 30 per cent seats to Meghalaya

Shillong, Jun 20 (UNI) The Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People(FKJGP) has demanded allotment of 30 per cent seats to Meghalaya in the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences here (NEIGRIHMS).

In a letter to Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss yesterday, the federation sought revocation of the proposal to allot only nine seats to the state for MBBS courses at the Institute.

The FKJGP said the Centre's move to allot nine seats to this northeastern state was unreasonable and sought the intervention of the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister.

Earlier, another NGO here had held responsible the NEIGRIHMS authorities for reducing the quota of seats to the state in the proposed MBBS courses .

Reacting to the allegation, the NEIGRIHMS authorities said, '' The institute authority has no role in allocation of seats for various states and the decision has been taken by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.'' The union ministry had even directed that the seats would be filled through competitive examinations to be conducted with the assistance of JIPMER, Pondicherry, sources said.

The union ministry on May 30 in an order said the state had been allotted nine seats followed by Nagaland--eight, Arunachal Pradesh-four, and Mizoram-three respectively.
