Dead fish found floating in canals

Chandigarh, Jun 20 (UNI) Heaps of dead fish have been found floating at Harike in Ferozepur district and Sirhind Feeder and Rajasthan Canal in Faridkot district since yesterday, affecting water supply.

The fish is believed to have died allegedly due to effluents flowing in these canals, sources said.

Industrial waste from Ludhiana and other cities and sewerage is discharged into these canals since a long time, making the water unfit for the survival of fish and other living bodies.

Some tortoises have also died at Harike, the confluence of Sutlej and Beas rivers.

Around 3 to 4 quintals of dead fish were lying on both sides of the canals in Fadidkot district, officials said.

Authorities have taken measures to provide water to the people from tubewells in the district.

Meanwhile, on the instructions of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, authorities have directed industrial units in the state to install water treatment plants at their units within 90 days, a report from Ferozepur quoting Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh said.
