Shillong, Jun 19 (UNI) A young unidentified woman, who was raped and murdered in Meghalaya, was buried today by an NGO after police failed to establish her identity.

The woman was found murdered and abandoned at Mawlai, Iewrynghep, on Friday.

Ever since, she was kept in a hospital morgue, many organisations had attempted to identify her.

Today the Civil Society Women Organisation performed the last rites of the deceased after getting permission from the East Khasi Hills district administration.

Earlier, many claimed that the deceased had attended a party organised by a private company at a city hotel here. But, police after examining the footage of the Closed Circuit TV Camera ruled out the victim being in the party.

Crime against women has been a major problem for the law enforcers here in this matrilineal society in Meghalaya.

Police say they are crippled in many ways in the absence of a sound forensic team, which at many times hampers investigation.

Moreover, the appellate body for redressal of women's cause - the State Women's Commission - is docked in controversy.

The government-constituted search and select committee to select the Chairman of the commission has so far not been able to find a suitable candidate for Chairman's post, despite several claimants.
