Writ on nun enrollment quashed

Kochi, Jun 17 (UNI) The Kerala High Court today dismissed a writ petition seeking to quash the recommendations made by the State Women's Commission for enacting a law to restrict girls below 18 years from being enrolled as nuns.

A Division bench comprising Chief Justice H L Dattu and Mr Justice A K Basheer, dismissing the petition filed by Mr Cyriac Varghese of Kasargode, observed ''the proceedings of the commission were recommendatory in nature.'' Mr Varghese, in his petition, sought the court's direction to the government not to place the recommendations before the Assembly.

The petition also said the recommendations were against the canons and affected the sentiments of the Christians, especially those of Roman Catholics.

The recommendations also infringed upon the fundamental rights as enshrined in the Constitution, Mr Varghese claimed in the petition.
