Appoint independent officer for Dharavi redevelopment: CM

Mumbai, Jun 17 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said Dharavi redevelopment, being an ambitious project, an independent officer was needed for its speedy and proper completion.

Speaking at a meeting on housing here yesterday, he said construction work of 65,000 houses had been started. Of the total project, one lakh houses would be constructed by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority, 2.5 lakh under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and Indira Awas Yojana and Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Scheme respectively and 1.5 under Slum Redevelopment scheme.

Mr Deshmukh also exhorted the officials to construct 10 lakh houses in two years.

He asked chief secretary Jonhy Joseph to appoint an independent officer to look after Dharavi Redevelopment project, according to an official release here today.
