Students develop car without gear
Karkala, Karnataka, Jun 15 (UNI) Four students of the Mechanical Department of NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte, have developed an innovative car without gear, accelerator or brake pedal.
The new car, christened as 'Joy Stick Car,' was developed by Mohammed Suheb, Sayyed Jasim, Rachan M Satischandra and Mohsin Ahmed Khateeb.
The unique feature of the car was that one could drive it single-handedly by using an all-in-one device joystick, eliminating the use of steering wheel, accelerator, clutch and brake pedal.
The two-seater car, weighing about 200 kg, could be accelerated with the pull on the joystick while a push would result in the brake effect. Turning the joystick to left or right gives the effect of steering to the respective sides, the students, who made the car, explained.
The students invention received the 'Best Project Award 2008' from the institute. The project was now under the process of claiming a patent.
The project was taken up under the guidance of Senior Professor of the Institute Mallikappa, known for his mechanical knowledge and selfless guidance to the students.
