DMK Women's Meet wants quick passage of women's bill

Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, June 15 (UNI) The DMK Women's Wing Conference today urged the Union Government and political parties to ensure passage of the Bill providing 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures without further delay.

A resolution to this effect, adopted at the conference, said the passage of the Bill was being delayed due to differences between political parties on providing BC/OBC quota within the 33 per cent reservation.

It said the Bill, which was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on the last day of the Budget Session, should be first passed in Parliament. Later, the parties could hold discussions to arrive at a consensus on providing the quota within the quota.

The resolution pointed out the DMK Government in Tamil Nadu had already provided one third reservation for women in local bodies.

Another resolution urged the Centre to provide 30 per cent quota for women in Central Government jobs similar to the reservation for women in Tamil Nadu in State Government jobs.

The conference also urged the Centre to take steps to provide reservation in private sector. The fruits of social justice had not reached the people because of the private companies not following the concept of reservation even after availing various incentives like infrastructure facilities and tax benefits provided by the government for setting up industries.

With the phenomenal growth in the number of private industries, the Centre should take immediate steps and pave way for reservation in private sector.
