Chennai, Jun 15 (UNI) The city police cracked the murder case of a 21-year-old pregnant woman at suburban Avadi by arresting today a second year college student who was a next-door neighbour.
Police said Sasikumar, who had been absconding for the last three days after the killing came to light, confessed to murdering the pregnant woman, also a mother of a 15-month-old baby, with an eye on her jewellery.
After committing the heinous crime, he decamped with the jewellery for living a lavish life with his lover.
Amudha, a 21-year-old housewife and two months pregnant, was found murdered with stab injuries. Police initially suspected her husband, who was working as a mechanic.
Detailed investigations showed Sasikumar, a student of Nandanam Arts College and residing next to Amudha's house, had gone missing giving the police a vital clue.
Investigation of the accused showed Sasikumar was having an affair with Sudha (18) who later became pregnant, leading to their marriage.
Sasikumar was living with her at suburban Kundrathur with the help of money provided by his friends. As he ran out of funds, the jewels worn by Amudha came to his mind and he planned to loot her house.
But his effort met with stiff resistance from Amudha who eventually ended up paying for her life.
Sasikumar's joy was shortlived as he was now cooling his heels behind the bars.
