US, Pakistan must repair their relationship: NYT

New York, June 14 : Washington and Islamabad must now do everything they can to repair relations, starting with a joint investigation and a full public report on bombing by US forces on the Pak-Afghan border leading to the death of 11 soldiers, the New York Times has said.

Washington should quietly discuss with Pakistan the creation of an unpublicised and a small buffer zone wherein the US should not conduct attacks unless it had substantial intelligence that top al Qaeda figures were hiding there, the paper said.

"Pakistanis have a host of grievances against the Americans, made worse by the Bush Administration's decision to back President Pervez Musharraf long after he had lost popular support and any claim to loyalty," according to the paper.

However, it noted that Musharraf and Pakistan's newly elected leaders had failed to tell the people that the fight against extremists was essential for the country's stability and security.
