Two run over by bus in Bengal

Hooghly, Jun 14 (UNI) Two people were killed today when a bus, of the Uttarpara-Bhagabatipur route, ran over a motorcycle while trying to overtake another bus of the same route at the Chanditala police station area under Srerampore subdivision in the district.

Srerampore Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ajay Thakur said the two victims were killed on the spot. However, the bus driver managed to flee.

Meanwhile, an irate mob of locals set ablaze six buses of the same route to protest the incident.

Police personnel had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the mob. Chanditala police station Officer In-charge Parthasarathi Majumdar was on the spot, the SDPO said, adding that the situation now was under control although tension prevailed.

However, fire tenders were yet to arrive on the spot to douse the flames.

Local people alleged that the bus drivers of the route often indulged in rash driving resulting in frequent accidents.
