Hisar, Jun 14 (UNI) A former 'sarpanch' of Matarsham, who was guilty of murdering six of his relatives -- including his wife and two sons, was gunned down on the outskirts of the town this morning, police said here.

Ishwar Singh, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murders by a lower court, was out on bail granted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In March 1999, he had murdered his aged father, wife, two sons, sister-in-law and nephew and in December 2003 the local District and Sessions court had held him guilty and sentenced him to life term.

Giving details of today's incident, SP Satish Balan said Ishwar Singh was coming to the town in his car when two people stopped him on the outskirts on the Sirsa-Delhi highway. He halted his vehicle and after getting down he talked to them.

Mr Balan said Ishwar Singh was shot dead, when he was getting back into his car. He died on the spot.

According to the SP, the person who fired the fatal shot at the former sarpanch was identified as Subhash Fauji. The identification was made by one Raghbir Singh, who was travelling with Ishwar Singh.

The police were probing the possible involvement of Chander Singh, the brother of Ishwar Singh in the incident. Chander Singh was an eye witness to the family killings in 1999.

Preliminary inquries by the police revealed that Ishwar Singh had attempted to crush Chander Singh under his car a few days ago.
