Earthquake fear in Hamirpur in UP

Hamirpur (UP), June 14: Villagers in Hamirpur village in Uttar Pradesh are scared after fissures appeared on the ground leading to rumours of the possibility of an imminent earthquake.

People said they were afraid to go back to their house, fearing they may collapse any time. "Cracks developed on walls. We fled out of the house and did not go in again," said Hari Shankar, a villager. Officials said the geological phenomenon had occurred earlier as well. "Cracks appearing on the ground are happening again. Earlier when it happened, the geologists had studied it. Now, we will again ask them to take a look into it and tell us the reasons for it. We will take precautionary measures on their advice," said Samir Verma, district official. The state falls in seismic zone four. Hamirpur is the place where a devastating earthquake had struck in 1999, leaving at least 103 people dead.
