Rs 30 cr relief package for Bhagalpur riot victims
New Delhi, Jun 12 (UNI) Almost 20 years after the Bhagalpur riots took place, the Government today announced a Rs 29.81 crore compensation package for the victims of the communal violence.
The package is on par with the one announced for the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, an official spokesman said after the Union Cabinet approved the package.
Recently, the Government had announced a relief package for the victims of the 2002 Gujarat riots.
According to the compensation package for the victims of 1989-90 Bhagalpur riot, Rs 3.5 lakh each will be paid to the next of the kin of 844 people killed, entailing an expenditure of Rs 29.54 crore.
This will be in addition to the amount already paid by the Bihar Government.
The 22 persons injured in the riots will receive Rs 1.25 lakh each, which will be reduced by the amount already paid by the State Government.
This will entail an expenditure of Rs 26.99 lakh for the injured for whom the State Government had spent Rs 50,715.
