Old man killed as tree uprooted

Udupi, June 11 (UNI) A 78-year-old person was killed when a tree fell on him at Saalmara in Karkala taluk following heavy rains in the wake of monsoon becoming active in the coastal districts of Karnataka.

According to Revenue officials, the tree fell on the old man when he was walking on the road, killing him on the spot.

With this, the death toll in the district due to rains rose to four this month. On Monday, two persons had died at Bramhagiri in the city and one at Manoor in Kundapura taluk.

Heavy rains also damaged a house in Mallar under Kaup police station limits, but no injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, severe sea erosion was reported at Kaup, Kodi Bengre, Ullal, Kotepura and Someshwar.

Heavy rains continued today in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district. Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada recorded the highest rainfall of 19 cm in the State during the last 24 hours, while Karwar received ten cm.
